El Paso - take 200/2019

Why Swiss and Canadians stop caring - and don’t (or do) ask New Zealanders

The 200th mass shooting in the U.S. in 2019 (we are mid way through the year mind you) with at least 20 fatalities will produce the same old response domestically. However, folks in Switzerland, Canada and New Zealand just don’t care any longer.

Gun density is a one-sided view point when it comes to correlations of gun ownership and its uses.

Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world but one of the lowest gun related crime rates at the same time. Canadians know this, New Zealanders actually re-learn it after the Christ Church massacre in March 2019.

But the gun-ownership-homicide ratio seems to hold true in the U.S. Why is that?

While data can help us to make sense of the dynamics and impact, numbers don’t explain the correlation on a global scale.

To me it all boils down to culture.

Neither Swiss, nor Canadians, nor New Zealanders ever developed a romantic attitude towards violence as a large part of the U.S. population seems to have inherited through history, pathos and the mastery of cultural delivery through modern art forms, namely film.

Add stark inequality, the lack of social solidarity at large, elites that largely don’t run on social justice and minority support tickets and the corruptions through armies of lobbyists in D.C. and you get a lethal culture adopted by weak minded, crime oriented and psychologically unstable people that are not stopped in their tracks to become the next mass shooter.

The spooning vice president

The spooning vice president

And while the NRA keeps feeding the false narrative of “guns don’t kill” and other bogus claims and Pence keeps spooning (a blowjob on public stage would even offend the Trump groupies I guess) the POTUS during a heart-felt PR once again, the next would-be Adam Lanza is being left unattended and unsupported in his (why women mass shooters are rare) ill-guided gun violence adoring cultural environment.

The catalyst however and with that: the loudest engine (for anyone who wants to hear it) that tears the American civil society fabric apart is this:

UPDATE, minutes after blogging:

This is the fastest update I ever made to a blogpost.

While we are all still busy reading through all the “heartfelt thoughts and prayers”, media outlets showcase the latest responses from lawmakers and state representatives. Including this Fox8 report about Ohio state officials hours after the shooting:

ohio-el-paso-shooting-august-2019

Little is known at this point in time that all this is being prepared and spoken simultaneously to the next mass shooing in that very same state, Ohio (Dayton).

POTUS tweeted hours before: “....Melania and I send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the great people of Texas.”

Now, copy/paste away Mr. President as if there won’t be a tomorrow! Don’t forget to replace the one great state with the other in your presidential tweet.

In fact, there will not be a tomorrow for 30 people left dead to gun violence inside 12 hours.

Will Team Trump Find the Gödel Loophole?

Gödel’s loophole: the amendment procedures set forth in Article V of the U.S. Constitution apply to the constitutional statements in Article V themselves.
In addition, not only may Article V itself be amended, but also it may be amended in an upward or downward direction.
Lastly, the Gödelian problem of self-amendment or anti-entrenchment is unsolvable - which is, to say it mildly: scary a.f.

The United States of America as a Dictatorship - Enabled by the Gödel Loophole?

The president's total power as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces under Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. constitution might very well have prevented a dictatorship during war times and some people argue that this power might as well be abused by a narcissist egomaniac beyond bloodshed periods.

However, there might just be enough deeply constitutional republicans in both state legislatures and the congress to be aghast at that prospect.

The danger of the United States of America to be stripped of democratic foundations like the separation of power and ultimately to be morphed into a dictatorship, might come from a seemingly unlikely place: the Constitution, more precisely Article V, itself!

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eightshall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

One thing the article lacks is a clause exempting itself from being amended, meaning the Constitution could be entirely rewritten if someone managed to amend Article V. Currently, it takes a two-thirds majority of votes both in Congress and among the states to change anything about the document, but if one party could ever get those numbers for even a second, they could vote to change about anything (Gödel’s loophole).

And even if lawmakers carried their concerns to the supreme court - with recent SC appointments and the 85th United States Attorney General as the president’s puppy dog - the outcome could result in either or both: an unresolvable constitutional crisis or flat out civil conflict.

Question being now: is team Trump strategically looking to find and exploit Gödel’s loophole and is the U.S. civil society prepared and willing to intervene?

“Vote for a living wage for others. Vote for health insurance for others. Don’t get in the way of food stamps for others. Understand how important $17 might be to others. That poor stretch of Atlanta is quiet because people are working and paying for daycare. They’re clocking the same hours you’re clocking, but they make a shit wage.”

An impressive reflection on inequality.

Holy War Catalysts

The Invisible Eminence in the Hidden Castle has a grand plan

One of the more naive depictions of the hidden Leninist in the current White House claims him to be the "Leni Riefenstahl of the right wing conservatives".

Only, Riefenstahl merely corrupted herself into an accessory to a humongous destruction engine.

While The Invisible Eminence in the Hidden Castle configures catalysts to vaporize checks and balances and ultimately: a world order with a core stability we all depend on.

And if your are not scared enough: Bannon And The National Security Council’s Secret “Kill List”.
